Superb Burns Double Buries The Beanos

Paul Burns
A superb double by Paul Burns kept Queens on their winning ways as they eventually stifled a fighting Stirling side.

Queens got very quickly into their stride and could have been a couple of goals up in the early stages with O'Connor missing two relatively easy chances. Paul Burns however settled the nerves when he latched on to a wonderful pass from O'Connor to beat the Stirling keeper at his far post on 8 minutes.

The larger than usual Palmy crowd sat back expecting more goals but Stirling playing a 4-5-1 formation were making life difficult. The normally reliable Jim Thomson was looking rather uneasy at the back as Stirling to their credit pushed up. The visitors were rewarded on 16 minutes when a rash clearance by Thomson presented Aitken with a chance he could not miss to equalise for Stirling on 16 minutes to silence the Palmy faithful.

Stirling went through a good spell shortly afterwards but Queens weathered the storm and with Tosh and McFarlane bossing the midfield, gradually started making chances. On 40 minutes after mounting pressure Burns controlled a great cross from Tosh and stroked the ball into the top corner of the net past a despairing Hogarth. Queens were well worth their half-time lead although it should have been more.

The second half was largely dominated by Queens and they should have increased their lead before the 52nd minute when Thomson got his napper on to a long Harris free-kick to eventually kill the game.

Queens won well in the end but Stirling made them fight all the way. Again it was another great team effort with everyone playing their part. We can look forward to our away day at Partick next Saturday with confidence.
