SUPER STRIKE BY BURNS EARNS QUEENS A DRAW

Last updated : 24 July 2004 By Duke Of Galloway
A wonderful goal by Paul Burns earned Queens a deserved share of the spoils against the Conference League Champions at the Deva Stadium Chester. A large following of Queens fans made the journey from Dumfries and had to endure horrendous traffic jams en route. Those lucky to make it to the trim Diva Stadium were made very welcome by the locals and were very soon refreshed with a few pints of Boddingtons. The game kicked off in front of a crowd of over 1,000 and very soon the Chester side were showing their pedigree as Thomson and Reid were given a thorough examination. Little was seen of the Queens attack which was led by Mc Niven and Payne. Queens lost a rather silly goal to Branch who took full advantage of a mix-up between Reid and Thomson. Queens tried hard get forward but lacked width. Chester although not looking very convincing were worth their interval lead.

HT - Chester 1 Queens 0

Queens shifted things round for the second half with Wood replacing Payne and
Burns along with Gibson coming in on the flanks. Queens looked much better but it was Chester who went further ahead with a wonderful swerving shot by Drummond which completely foxed Scott in the Queens goal. This reverse seemed to spur on Queens and with the large vocal travelling support giving it the full welly, they really had a go at the home defence who did not fancy Wood and Burns running at them. Queens started to make chances and with Gibson also creating havoc, the Chester defence looked very uneasy. It was no surprise when Wood pulled one back and with the home defence in complete shock Burns curled in a lovely shot for the equaliser. Queens urged on by a now delirious support went for the jugular and Bowey almost lobbed in what would have been a dramatic winner. Chester much to the relief of their supporters however hung on for the draw. This was more like it from Queens as their second half performance was simply outstanding and I can't wait for the Airdrie match next week.
