Another league leader founders on McPherson's Palmerston rock
LIGHTNING struck twice in Dumfries in the space of eight days, with Gus McPherson's Queen of the South sending league leaders home with tails between their legs for a second time.
Last weekend, Hamilton left Palmerston Park without a point, and this time it was Morton who were seen off, with the Doonhamers registering a 4-1 win.
Morton had gone close to scoring in the opening exchanges before Queens took the lead in 19 minutes when Mark Campbell headed into the path of Kevin Smithwho slammed the ball home.
With half an hour gone, Tom Brighton headed a second and, three minutes later, Smith nodded in an Allan Johnston cross to make it three.
Morton were stunned again when Smith picked up another Johnston pass to complete his hat-trick and make it four before half time.
Peter MacDonald salvaged a crumb of comfort for the Greenock side with a late goal, although it failed to wipe the smile from McPherson's face.
The manager said: "The boys showed what they are made of and they did it against a good Morton side. We had been playing well and not getting any reward but we have in the last couple of games."
Morton boss Allan Moore said: "I knew it would be a tough game but I was not expecting this result."
