A Kris Doolan header decided a cagey encounter as Partick earned a victory over First Division rivals Queen of the South.

Partick goalkeeper Scott Fox was called into action inside a minute, tipping over Kevin Smith's bullet header after a quick break from the centre circle.

The Jags settled into a good rhythm and were unlucky not to take any advantage into the break, as both Aaron Sinclair and Conrad Balatoni spurned clear-cut chances to score.

It was Doolan who finally broke the deadlock two minutes after the interval.

Lee Robinson could only parry Sinclair's powerful free-kick and Paul Cairney chipped in for Doolan to nod home.

The Doonhamers threatened a response with 20 minutes remaining when Ryan McGuffie rose to meet Scott McLaughlin's swerving cross, but his headed effort was wayward.

Craig Reid then blasted at Jags stopper Fox from distance, but the shot was easily saved as the hosts secured victory.

Queens are now firmly rooted to the bottom of the league and the New Year clash with Hamilton is looking like a last chance saloon affair. Desperate times indeed for the Queen's faithful.
