QUEENS WIN IN GEORDIELAND

Last updated : 22 July 2007 By Lord Palmerston

Queens eased past a more than useful Benfield side after their hosts dominated a scrappy first half to lead by a single goal at the interval. The non-league side started off like a bomb and a shaky Queens rearguard were exposed when Benfield took the lead in 2 minutes with Shandron forcing the ball home past McDonald after a goalmouth scramble. Queens were all at sea at this stage but gradually clawed themselves back into the game with new signing Gilmour showing some delightful touches. Dobbie had a great chance to equalise but Tosh fired wide and minutes later Dobbie tried to casually lob the ball into the net but the Home Keeper was too alert. Meanwhile Benfield were still giving Queens problems and with Banjua showing up well in midfield the away defence was being given a thorough examination. In fact Benfield could have had a comfortable interval lead but for two point blank saves by the Queens keeper.

Half-Time Benfield 1 Queens 0

Queens shuffled the pack round for the second half with the injured Tosh replaced by new signing Harris and O'Neill taking over from Robertson. Queens equalsied on 49 minutes when a lucky rebound came off Aitken and rolled into the net after a cross from Gilmour had caused panic in the home ranks. Queens now took control and it was no surprise when Bingham scored on 53 minutes after Dobbie had carved open the Benfield defence. The Home side tried hard to get back into the game but Queens had the bit firmly between their teeth and finished the game off in the 89th minute when Dobbie scored from the spot after O'Neill seemed to have been pushed in the penalty area.

Not a great display by Queens but they came back well after a very scary first half. New signings Harris and Gilmour looked very sharp and look great signings. I was once again impressed with McFarlane and Bingham put in a tremendous shift for the full 90 minutes.

Queens manager Chisolm must be pleased with his squad but they will have a real examination against Gretna on Wednesday followed by the visit of Carlisle to Palmy on Saturday.
