QUEENS TRIUMPH OVER BULLY WEE

Last updated : 09 August 2006 By Duke of Galloway

Queens progressed to the next round of the CIS cup after a handsome yet flattering win against a talented Clyde side who dominated for long periods but lacked punch up front. The Bully Wee were well on top in the early exchanges and the Queens defence gave away a series of corners until O'Neill put Queens ahead in the 8th minute. Queens continued to exploit the gaps in the visitors rearguard and a Henderson header put the home side 2-0 up on 17 minutes. Clyde tried hard to get back into the game but a solo effort from Weir on 32 minutes put Queens firmly in control. A blunder by Queens keeper Corr gave Clyde a lifeline when he failed to gather a free-kick and Imrie scored on 43 minutes. Queens reply was another goal from O'Neill just before the half-time whistle. Queens were perhaps a shade fortunate to be 4-1 up at the interval.

Half-Time 4-1

Queens seemed content to sit back on their lead at the start of the second half but there was concern when the defence got in a tangle and handed Clyde a penalty on 52 minutes which O'Donnell expertly put away. Queens went through a rather sticky patch soon afterwards as Clyde chased the game. Queens keeper Corr seemed to have lost his confidence as he slapped at a couple of corners and the home goal was lucky to survive. Murray Henderson and Co. however held firm although it must be said Clyde totally dominated almost the entire half. O'Connor had a glorious chance to finish Clyde off but his header dropped wide. Clyde with all their dominance showed little punch up front although Corr did keep them out with a couple of specatacular saves.

Queens man of the Match - Murray Henderson was immense in defence and he is a real threat in the air as demonstrated by his wonderful header for Queens vital second goal.
