QUEENS TAME THE BAIRNS

Queens fully deserved a share of the points against a top drawer Falkirk side, in what turned out to be a tremendous match played in a cup-tie atmosphere. Queens got in about the Bairns from the start and put their back four under tremendous pressure. Both Lyle and Weatherson had shots blocked on the line by a desperate Falkirk defence as Queens turned up the heat. Queens took the lead in 11 minutes when Mc Colligan rose like a little bird to a Neilson cross and bullet a header past Hill in the Falkirk goal. As expected Falkirk pushed up in search of an equaliser but the Queens rearguard superbly marshalled by the ever improving Anderson held firm. In fact Queens looked the more impressive team and should have increased their lead befor the break. As Queens trooped off at half-time the general opinion was that a one goal lead was not enough against a quality side like Falkirk.

Half-Time Queens 1 Falkirk 0

Falkirk came out with all guns blazing for the second half and questions were being asked of the Queens defence. The Bairns forced several corners but Queens back four dealt with them comfortably. However Falkirk managed to equalise 5 minutes into the second half and it had an element of luck about it. The towering James managed to get in a header which Goram appeared to touch on to the post. The ball rebounded straight into the path of Henry who blasted the ball high into the empty net. Falkirk now went after the kill but Queens refused to wilt and weathered the storm. In the last quarter Queens came back at Falkirk and could have sneaked a win. To be quite honest neither team deserved to lose and both can be quite happy with a draw. In my opinion Falklirk are the best team I have seen at Palmy this season and are worthy league leaders. Queens however, especially in the first half were no way inferior and most certainly will survive in this division. In all a tremendous match played at a terrific pace and considering Queens are part-time they did well to stay with Falkirk. I must mention the crowd who were tremendous and gave the team wonderful encouragement throughout. The small band of vociferous fans with the big flag have certainly livened up the atmosphere in the West Stand. Now lets have a real go at Ayr next week and grab three more points.
Bairns clear in the Autumn gloom.
