Brechin and Queen of South battled their way to an exciting 1-1 draw - a result that does neither side much good in their fight against relegation.

Queen of South were first to threaten in the 13th minute when Brian McLaughlin forced a great save from Craig Nelson. From the resulting corner Jim Thomson had a header cleared off the line by Steve Hamilton.

Brechin opened the scoring on 28 minutes when Kevin Byers collected a Gerry Britton pass and made space for himself before finding the net from the edge of the box.

Brechin pressed forward and Steven Hampshire had an attempt saved before Darren Smith drove inches over from a tight angle.

On 37 minutes Byers crossed for Britton to head wide on the near post.

Two minutes from half time Britton headed on to Hampshire and his shot came back off the post.

In the 53rd minute a stinging drive from Byers was well saved by Colin Scott.

Queen of South levelled after 55 minutes when Derek Lyle swung in a cross and Hamilton headed into his own net under pressure.

Brechin looked the likelier side to go on and win the game and on 67 minutes Byers lobbed over Scott and just over the bar.

On 70 minutes Byers got in again and Scott did well to save at his feet.

Brechin threw everything forward as they looked for their first win of the season and Byers collected a Paul Ritchie flick and had another drive saved by Scott.

Right on full time Lyle almost won it for South when he headed inches over the bar.
