QUEENS CRUISED INTO THE SECOND ROUND OF THE CHALLENGE CUP WITH AN IMPRESSIVE FIVE GOAL DEMOLITION OF BERWICK AT A MISTY AND HUMID SHIELFIELD PARK
Queens took complete control of the match from the start and with a vociferous travelling support yelling them on the Berwick goalie McGurk was under severe pressure. O'Connor put Queens ahead after 12 minutes when McGurk failed to hold a Dobbie effort.
It was now one way traffic as the Home defence were put through the mill by an eager Queens team in which Dobbie was simply outstanding in his midfield role just behind O'Connor and Kean. It was Dobbie who set up the second goal for Kean on 31 minutes from a delightful cross.
Shots continued to rain in on the Home keeper until Half-Time with Thomson going the closest with his header crashing against the crossbar. Queens left the field at Half-Time to roars of approval from the away support.
Half-Time - Berwick 0 Queens 2
There was a timely reminder for Queens that there was still work to be done when Little pulled one back for Berwick on 47 minutes when he took advantage of an error by Reid to beat Halliwell with an awkward first time shot which sqeezed in via the goalie's hand. Both Reid and Halliwell looked badly at fault for the goal but Queens stormed back and soon had the harrassed Home defence under severe pressure. It was no surprise when O'Connor headed home number three 58 minutes from a Barr cross.
Queens were now in crusie control anf O'Connor and Kean should have added further goals until on 65 minutes Kean sored his second. Barr put the icing on the cake on 80 minutes with a looping header but by that time the Berwick side had thrown in the towel.
In all an impressive display by Queens despite the error which led to the Berwick goal and I'm sure Gordon Chisolm will have that sorted out in training this week. Dobbie was simply outstanding in his new midfield role and he had magnificent support from Tosh and Macfarlane. O'Connor and Kean lead the Home defence a merry dance and with Arbuckle and McGowan ready to come off the bench there are certainly goals in this side.
It's back to the bread and butter of the league next Saturday against Airdrie United at Palmy and everyone hopes we have further success.
Queens MAD man of the match - Stephen Dobbie - simply brilliant !
