Kevin Nisbet's second-half penalty miss proved crucial as Queen of the South won at Dumbarton to stay in touch with the Championship play-off spots.
The visitors broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half when Dominic Thomas' free-kick from just outside the area crept in.
Stephen Dobbie's handball in the area offered The Sons a route back into the game after 67 minutes.
But Nisbet blazed his spot-kick over the bar and Queens held on for the win.
They moved above Dunfermline into fifth, two points behind Dundee United, who have three games in hand.
Dumbarton remain nine points adrift of safety in the relegation play-off spot.
