A goal by Derek Lyle 28 minutes into the game was enough to give Queen of the South all three points over their Highlands rivals.
The goal was a result of a blunder by two defenders who went for the same ball.
It broke through to Lyle who ran in and slipped it past the advancing keeper.
Earlier, both sides had chances with Ross County taking advantage of a Queens' slip in the opening minutes.
Alexander Burke tried to lob the keeper but Colin Scott scrambled back and managed to pull the ball down just under the bar.
The Queens luck was out too when Paul Burns weaved his way through the County defence and cracked in an angled drive only to see it rebound off the post.
But it was Queens who made that breakthrough and for a spell after that they hit a purple patch with some fine football which left the Ross County defenders back pedaling.
But they weathered the storm and Burke should have scored against his former team-mates when he got on the end of a long clearance upfield, but his drive across goal went just outside the post.
County maintained a strong effort throughout the second period in a bid to salvage a point but they just could not take advantage of the pressure .
