Queens took the field with a trialist goalkeeper Neil Bennet who apparantly hails from Darlington. Also included was Mc Guffie who was recently released from Newcastle. The reliable combination of Allan and Aitken retained their positions in the centre of defence and Anderson came back in at left back. It was the usual friendly stuff as both sides knocked the ball around keeping things tight and trying to stay clear of injuries. Barnsley looked big and fit but created very little against a Queens defence in which Aitken and Allan were giving nothing away. The trialist goalkeeper looked very reliable and looks the part and I think JC will eventually sign him. There was very little in goalmouth action until big O'Connor got a sight of goal and looked certain to score but as he was about to pull the trigger he was tackled and his effort was dealt with by the Barnsley keeper. The same player had to leave the field shortly afterwards due to an injury sustained in the tackle. The half ended with neither side achieving very much in the way of chances but Queens were slightly ahead of their more illustrious opponents who included several highly priced players amongst their full time ranks.
Half Time 0-0
Queens kicked off into their more favoured home end and took control of the game, forcing Barnsley back on the defensive. The introduction of Weatherson was causing all sorts of problems to the Barnsley back four and it was no surprise when Queens took the lead in the 61st minute. Mc Alpine cut in from the left and his cross cum shot was slammed into the roof of the net by the delighted Weatherson. Barnsley were obviously stung by this reverse and threw everything at Queens but with Aitken,Allan and trialist keeper Bennett in magnificent form the Palmerston outfit held firm. Queens finished the match competent winners and all looks well for the future. Clyde will better watch out on August 3rd because this Queens team is in a determined mood and in this form will give anyone a good match.
