LYLE DOUBLE SINKS DISAPPOINTING COUNTY

Joe McAlpine in the thick of things !!!

Queens fully deserved their victory against a rather static and disappointing Ross County. For once Queens put away their chances and to be quite honest never looked like losing. The game kicked off in front of a rather disappointing crowd and those present were wondering where on earth were the missing 3,000 fans who were at Broadwood. Queens started brightly and soon had the County defence in all sorts of bother and it was no surprise when Bowyer broke down the right in 11 minutes and squared for Lyle to sweep the ball past a helpless Gilbert in the Ross goal. Ross looked to have the edge in mid-field but Queens were more direct and Mc Alpine should have put Queen 2-0 up but blasted over from about six yards. County huffed and puffed but could not find a way past the Queens reaguard in which Thomson and Aitken were giving nothing away. Anderson looked slow and exposed but he was sticking to his task played his part at keeping the Highlanders at bay. There was an unusual incident just before half-time when the referee got pole-axed by a clearance and had to be carried off. There was a few minutes pause whilst an appeal went out to the crowd for a replacement linesman. One of the linesman took over as referee and a local official kindly ran the line. Queens went in at the break well worth their 1-0 lead.

Half-Time Queen 1 Ross 0

Queens carried on after the break and took the game to County and soon had the visitor's defence in trouble. The referee had to be on his guard as Queens became the victims of some heavy challenges from the Highlanders. On 49 minutes Weatherson had a go from some 30 yards and the ball crashed back off the bar right to the feet of Lyle who was nicely positioned on the edge of the box. The on form striker took the ball on the half volley and sent a daisy cutter into the corner of the net past a bemused County keeper. Queens were now in the comfort zone but the game was far from won as County pushed up in a desperate attempt to salvage something from the game. The Queens however held firm and Queens finished comfortable winners and Goram had very little to do. Big Sean O'Connor came on towards the end to loud cheers and he did his best to rub salt in the County wounds. In all a very decent display by Queens who made Ross look rather ordinary. I feel we can give Falkirk something to think about next Saturday and who knows in front of a large noisy crowd we may even get a result. Congratulations be the way to the band of noisy Queens fans with the large banner who brought some life at last to the West stand.
