Once again Queens failed to press home an early advantage with O'Connor just thwarted by Saints Cuthbert and then Adams headed narrowly wide. Dobbie also had similar bad luck when his effort was cleared off the line followed by O'Connor heading just wide. It was somewhat against the run of play when the normally reliable MacDonald seemed to fumble a corner and Laurie gleefully headed home the loose ball on 40 minutes.
As is often the case the first goal is so important as St Johnstone took control and Queens early dominance evaporated. The second half began in controversial circumstances as Jason Scotland seemed to assault Adams from behind and how he remained on the pitch is a mystery. Some of the Queens fans were appalled by the incident which the referee had obviously missed and the striker was the target of some abuse for the rest of the match. To rub salt into the wounds Queens suffered another setback when Mensing took advantage of further slack defending to head Saints into a 2-0 lead on 64 minutes. McLaren put the icing on the cake when he slotted home Saints third on 70 minutes.
