Plastic pitch or no plastic pitch, winter football arrived with a vengeance when Queens visited Hamilton. Queen's manager Ian Scott had been critical of the New Douglas Park surface before the match, although his side's unconvincing performance against an Accies team that was little better should command his more immediate attention.
The game looked all set for a 0-0 draw until the 89th minute when Stevie Thompson gave The Accies their first win in five matches.
Brian Carrigan sent in a long-range free-kick that was blocked but not cleared by the Queen's defence. The ball fell to Thompson, who smashed in his low drive from the edge of the box.
Queens had plenty of possession, especially in the first half, but failed to create any clear-cut chances.
The visitors did go close through Eric Paton, who forced David McEwan to tip over a first half free-kick from 20 yards. The same player went close from 25 yards just before half-time and Steve Bowey had a shot well saved on the hour.
But The Accies created the more chances, mostly courtesy of an unconvincing Queens' defence.
Just after half-time Carrigan blasted wide over an open goal from six yards after Colin Scott and Gary Wood had collided.
After the match Ian Scott was still complaining about the artificial surface, although weak defending and an apparent lack of ideas up front hurt Queens more.
The Accies just about deserved the win due to the chances they created, but this match will be best forgotten.
