DOBBIE ON THE DOUBLE AS THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Last updated : 04 March 2007 By Duke of Galloway

Queens moved off the bottom of the league with an emphatic win against local rivals Gretna in a match which the Doonhamers completely dominated thanks to a solid midfield, tight defence and a very dangerous attack which the big spending home side just could not handle. Gretna looked anything but league leaders let alone Premier League material as Queens tore them to shreds in the closing stages and with a little more care the margin of victory could have been greater.

The ecstatic Queens support were in their element and despite most being squashed into a glorified bus shelter sang their hearts out. Queens with Adams outstanding took a firm grip of the midfield and panic signals were beginning to show at the heart of the home defence who were playing a very dangerous offside trap. O'Connor and Dobbie were proving a very hot handful and it was no surprise when Dobbie cut in from the right to beat Maine at the near post on 38 minutes and send the away support into Blue Heaven.

Queens went out for more but were lucky to survive a penalty claim as Gretna tried to claw themselves back. Gretna came out of the traps determined to get back into the game but with Jim Thomson and company keeping it tight at the back, the home side were soon on the back foot trying to stem the blue tide. Stevie Tosh eventually came on for Queens to huge cheers from the away support as the Gretna defence were gradually put through the mincer. Maine in partricular looked very shaky and from one of his blunders Dobbie tore in and walked the ball into the net on 68 minutes to put the game beyond Gretna.

It was mow party time for the Queens fans as their team tore Gretna to shreds in the closing stages. Chance after chance went a begging before a Paton free-kick took a wicked deflection on 88 minutes the put Queens 3-0 up amidst amazing scenes of celebration amongst the away support.

This performance in my opinion was even better than at Airdrie as Queens completely dominated their big spending rivals. The team has been transformed thanks to a dominant midfield and the defence has got much tighter with Jim Thomson in great knick. O'Connor and Dobbie are on song at the moment and a handful for any team. With Aitken,Tosh and Burns approaching full fitness,Queens look in great shape to survive in the division and let's hope they continue their winning ways against St Johnstone next week.
