BURKE DOUBLE SEES OFF COUNTY

Last updated : 24 September 2003 By Duke Of Galloway
Queens progressed into the 3rd round of the CIS Cup as they easily dismantled a disappointing Ross County at Victoria Park,Dingwall in front of a rather poor crowd of 959. As the Queens support arrived in Dingwall there was a slight powdering of snow on the surrounding Rosshire mountains but Queens seemed to relish the chilly conditions and took a firm grip of the game from the start with Bowey,O'Connor and Burke giving the County defence plenty to think about. The home keeper was by far the busier as Burke nipped in to put Queens a goal up in 5 minutes much to the delight of the 50-100 Doonhamers who had made the trip North. They were joined on the terracing by a mysterious Inverness Caley supporter in full club colours complete with a huge drum. Try as they may County just could not break down Queens defence with Kaiser Jim in total command. Queens were cointrolling the game and looked like scoring with almost every attack. O'Connor went close until Burke again ran through a bemused Ross defence in 38 minutes to put Queens deservedly ahead 2-0. Victoria Park was stunned and County tried in vain to pull one back before the interval but the Queens reaguard were not in a generous mood and the Doonhamers left the field at half-time well satisfied with their efforts.

Everyone expected County to come back at Queens but apart from a brief flurry at the start of the second half nothing materialised and Scott was rarely troubled. Queens roared on by the small band of fans went for more goals and Burns obliged on 51 minutes when his cross tool a wicked deflection and landed in the County net. Queens were now in complete control and County had no answer to the Doonhamer's direct style of play. O'Connor should have made it four when he chose to shoot instead of squaring to Bowey who was waiting to rollthe ball into an empty net but Queens were happy with three and the game finished with County frustrated by superior oppostion. This was a tremendous display by Queens and they didn't have a failure. Thomson was simply outstanding at the back with Burke and O'Connor looking a lethal combination up front. Let's hope we can land a plum tie in the next round. On the journey up the Travel Club bus unexpectedly parked up beside the Greenock Morton Official bus at Stirling Services. The Greenock side were on their way to Dundee for a CIS cup tie and some friendly banter was exchanged with Peter Weatherson and Warren Hawke both ex Queens players of course.
