BRECHIN EMBARRASS SLOPPY QUEENS

Last updated : 25 April 2004 By Duke Of Galloway

For the first time in ages the boos rang round Palmerston at ten to five on Saturday after Queens turned in another rather inept display against a gallant Brechin side who refused to give in and at the end of the day deserved their draw and in fact could have won. It all started so well for Queens after Jaconelli scored his first goal for Queens on 15 minutes, heading home a lovely free-kick from Paton. Although not entirley convincing Queens looked in control and with a bit of luck could have added to their one goal advantage. Brechin however were always a threat with the impressive Templeton a constant threat. Samson in Queens goal saved the Doonhamers on at least two occassions and the home team were well pleased with their half-time lead.

Half-Time Queens 1 Brechin City 0

Queens got off to a flyer at the start of the second half as Burke latched on to a through ball on 46 minutes to put Queens 2-0 up. The Palmy faithful then sat back hoping for Brechin to crumble but how wrong they were as the game went into the final quarter. Queens seemed to switch off as Brechin gradually fought back into the match. On 68 minutes Winter scored from close in and one could sense the panic in the Queens defence as Brechin went all out for the equaliser.
Queens at this time were in total disarray and it was no surprise when Gibson equalised for the Angus side as Palmerston held it's breath. Queens were in danger of total collapse but somehow Reid and Company held firm and the Doonhamers surged up field in a frutless attempt to salvage something from the game. Brechin however were more dangerous and nearly sneaked a win towards the end with their manager almost having kittens on the touchline. This was a poor display from Queens but Brechin must be given great credit as they certainly didn't look like bottom of the league material to me. Queens problems seemed to lie in midfield where they looked rather lightweight with Bowey for once having and off day. Only Paton and Reid in my opinion deserved pass marks with the rest just not interested. This Queens team is a shadow of the side which led the division at one stage and this may be down to our part-time status. JC must pick up the peices after this debacle and will be looking for a vast improvement against St Johnstone next week. The attendance was also disappointing with perhaps 800 down on the average. One bright note was Jaconelli's rousing first goal for Queens and what a cracker. Let's hope this is the first of many for the popular striker.
