Queens crashed out of the CIS after being reduced to 10 men for most of the second half against a battling East Fife side. Things didn't go right for Queens on the night - even the supporters buses got stuck in traffic jams and the referee had to delay the kick-off for several minutes until the fans got to their seats.
East Fife set out their stall from the kick-off with as many men behind the ball as possible and playing one man up. Queens tried hard to breakdown the home defence with their passing game but were frustrated by the Fifers who were fighting for everything. Nevertheless the visitors cheered on by a large vociferous away following, had several chances to go ahead with Aitken and Bingham bringing out fine saves from McCulloch in the home goal.
The Fifers also had the odd flurry up field and looked more confident as the half progressed. Only two point blank saves from Grindlay in the Queens goal prevented the home side from taking a shock lead. As half-time approached,Queens fans were becoming increasingly frustrated at the efforts of their team to break down the East Fife defence.
Half-Time : East Fife 0 Queens 0
Queens started confidently in the second half but the Home side continued to frustrate them with their spoiling tactics. The game had become rather untidy and that compounded by the morgue type atmosphere of New Bayview, was not pleasant viewing for the fans. Then came the incident which changed the whole course of the game when Queen's defender Harris lunged in with both feet at an oponent on 56 minutes. The referee was very close to the incident and issued a straight red card much to the fury of the Queens fans.
Queens now reduced to 10 men had to sacrifice a forward to bring on a defender and immediately were on the back foot. The Home side to full advantage and on 56 minutes forced a corner. The kick was met by Tweed whose header was cleared but landed at the feet of MacDonald who lashed it into the net from close in. Queens were stunned and roared on by their fans bombarded the Fifers goal in search of an equaliser but it was not to be despite Bingham and Mole missing easy chances.
The game ended in huge disappointment for the 200 odd fans who had travelled to support their favourites and the look on Queens chairman David Rae said it all.
One hopes this is only a blip in Queens form and they will have to bounce back against Dundee on Saturday. The sending off definitely was the turning point of the match but even before this incident the Queens midfield was misfiring with MacFarlane,Tosh and Scally struggling. Only Aitken,Grindlay and Paton gained pass
marks in a Queens side which never really came to grips with battling Home side who chased everything.
Well that's our CIS dreams over for yet another year and we wish the Fifers all the best in the next round.
