Alba Cup Final: Queens ace David Weatherston hoping for double glory with cousin Martin Laird .... reports Daily Record
QUEEN OF THE SOUTH star David Weatherston hopes he's celebrating a dream family double of Challenge Cup success and US Masters glory on Sunday night.
The 24-year-old is preparing to lock horns with Ross County at McDiarmid Park while cousin Martin Laird gets set to make his Augusta debut.
Weatherston is in regular contact with golfing hero Laird and sent his cousin congratulatory text messages after his recent victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
He will tune into the Masters coverage tonight as Glasgow exile Laird looks to continue his red-hot form.
The Queens ace will then chase his own personal glory in the all-First Division final with County in Perth.
He said: "It would be a bit special for my family if I lift the cup with Queens and my cousin wins the Masters.
"It would be an unusual double - I don't think anyone will have it on at the bookies.
"I keep in touch with Martin a lot. I went over to see him last year at the Players Championship and I try to watch him when he is in Scotland as well.
"He's the top Scot in the world rankings and has plenty of cash as well. I don't really see much of it!
"I was texting him last week after his win and he is pretty happy with his game.
"His mum and dad have gone out this week to watch him at Augusta. I'd love to be there too but I'm considering going over to watch the US Open in June.
"I'll be tuning in for the golf this week and I'm hoping Martin makes the cut.
"People are expecting him to contend but it's his debut so I don't think you can expect too much.
Edge "Martin is playing well but for him to win would still be unexpected."
Weatherston believes Queens have a far better chance of glory.
Kenny Brannigan's men are seeking to emulate their 2002/2003 triumph.
And the winger believes his side, who sit 11 points ahead of County in the table, have the edge against Jimmy Calderwood's troops.
Weatherston, who expects to shake off a groin injury to play, added: "We will be the favourites based on our league form.
"The boys know we are good enough but anything can happen in a final."
