BIG Jim Thomson might have closed a chapter in his 11-year career at Queen of the South with his testimonial match on Sunday … but he's promised to be there if the club needs him next season ... reports the Dumfries and Galloway Standard

With gaffer Kenny Brannigan having to work with a small squad, there's a good chance that JT - who coaches the under-19 team - will be brought in as back-up cover.

And the 39-year-old, who thanked the Palmerston faithful for their support, says he'd be more than willing to help out.

Speaking after the match, which the Ibrox side won 1-0, he said: "It will probably be one of the last times I'm on at Palmerston, but you never know.

"Kenny has drafted me in a couple of times when they've been short of bodies so I'm always available for Queens.

"I might get 45 minutes here or 20 minutes there.

"I'll always be there for Kenny, I think it'd be wrong not to be, I'm part of the furniture now.

"He's got a strong squad this year but the only problem is that it's a small squad so hopefully they can stay clear of injuries."

On Sunday, Thomson capped a memorable career with Queens which has seen him appear more than 300 times, captain them in Europe and in a Scottish Cup Final where he scored as well.

He was welcomed onto the pitch with 20 minutes to go with a standing ovation as he took the captain's armband off Bob Harris and took his place in defence.

And there was a similar applause at the end as the Queens legend went on a solo lap of honour with even the Rangers support showing their respect for the popular footballer who started his senior career with Clyde in 1991.

Thomson admitted it was an emotional end to the game and said: "I was like a coiled spring ready to come on.

"It was great playing against Rangers, they brought such a strong team down.

"I thought we played quite well at times, I thought we had a couple of good chances as well.

It is testament to the boys that it was only 1-0."
