Queens move youth training to Carlisle
QUEENS have shifted their youth training from Glasgow to Cumbria for next season ... REPORTS The Dumfries and Galloway Standard
The Doonhamers have moved their youngsters 90 miles south to Sheep Mount in Carlisle as part of an education package with East League side Gretna 2008.
Chairman Davie Rae told the Standard: “The facilities at Sheep Mount are absolutely magnificent. It ties up with what we used to have at Palmerston years ago. I am very enthusiastic about focusing on youth – I have said that for a number of years now.
“Before last season, we didn’t have an influx of young players since Paul Burns, Willie Gibson and Scott Robertson. It is a step forward for the club.”
Rae added: “We will be keeping a close eye on our young players and, if they are performing well, the new manager will be able to get them to train with the senior squad.”
Two teams of 20 from Queens and Gretna will take part in the scheme which is split between education and training.
Gretna boss Stuart Rome said: “It’s a very exciting time for the club. We’ll be working very closely with Queen of the South and continuing to develop an already excellent relationship.
“Both clubs are benefiting from the link. Players of theirs who have been on loan with us have done very well.”
Gretna’s youth players will take part in the East of Scotland Youth league.
Queens’ commercial manager Mark McMinn has left his full-time post. The news was announced on the club website. The statement says: “The directors would like to place on record their thanks to Mark for his efforts over the last two years. Mark will continue to work with the club in some commercial areas on a part-time basis.”
